How to Choose Commercial Outdoor Planters: Size, Material, and Placement

Commercial planters do more work than most people realize. They define circulation, screen sightlines, soften hard surfaces, provide security separation, and carry a significant portion of a streetscape's visual identity.

Choosing them badly means plants that die, planters that crack, or units that get moved or stolen. Here's how to specify them properly.

Start With What the Planter Is For

The intended function drives nearly every other decision.

Decorative accent — seasonal flowers, entrance framing, visual interest. Smaller planters work. Soil volume matters less because plantings are replaced regularly anyway.

Permanent landscaping — shrubs, small trees, perennials that overwinter. Soil volume becomes critical. Undersized planters kill plants slowly through root restriction and moisture instability.

Spatial definition — separating a patio from a walkway, guiding pedestrian flow, screening a service area. Size and visual weight matter more than planting capacity.

Security and barrier — protecting building entrances, restricting vehicle access. Weight is the primary specification. A planter light enough to move isn't a barrier.

Be honest about which of these you're actually solving for, because the right answer differs substantially.

Sizing: Match the Planter to the Plant

The most common specification error is under-sizing for the intended planting.

Why volume matters more than people expect: soil volume determines water retention. Small planters dry out fast — sometimes within a day in summer heat — which means either daily watering or dead plants. Larger volumes buffer moisture and temperature swings, keeping roots viable through conditions that would kill plants in a smaller container.

Material Selection

Recycled plastic

Strengths: No rot, no rust, no cracking from freeze-thaw. Doesn't require sealing or painting. Colour runs through the material so scratches don't expose a different surface. Substantial weight resists movement without being unmanageable.

Considerations: Higher upfront cost than basic plastic or wood. Fewer decorative style options than ceramic or cast stone.

Wood

Strengths: Natural appearance. Lower upfront cost. Blends well in park and garden settings.

Considerations: Soil contact means constant moisture against the wood — this is the harshest possible application for the material. Even treated wood planters degrade faster than wood benches. Requires liners to extend life.

Concrete and cast stone

Strengths: Extremely heavy, so excellent for security applications. Very long lifespan. Traditional appearance.

Considerations: Can crack from freeze-thaw if water penetrates and the mix isn't rated for it. Extremely difficult to relocate once placed. High transport cost due to weight.

Metal

Strengths: Modern appearance. Strong for its weight. Corten and similar steels develop a stable patina.

Considerations: Soil moisture accelerates corrosion from the inside. Heat transfer can cook roots in direct summer sun. Requires liner and drainage attention.

Fibreglass and lightweight composites

Strengths: Light, easy to move, wide range of finishes.

Considerations: Light weight is a liability in public spaces — easily moved, tipped, or stolen. Can become brittle with UV exposure over time.

Drainage: The Thing That Kills Plants

Poor drainage is the most common cause of plant failure in commercial planters, and it's almost always a specification oversight.

Check whether the planter has drainage holes. Many decorative planters don't. Water collects at the bottom, roots sit saturated, and plants die from root rot — slowly enough that the cause isn't obvious.

In freeze-thaw climates, drainage is also a structural issue. Water trapped in a planter expands when it freezes. Concrete and ceramic planters crack this way regularly in Canadian winters.

Consider elevation. Planters sitting flat on a hard surface can block their own drainage holes. Feet, risers, or a gravel base help.

Weight and Placement Security

In public spaces, weight is a specification, not an afterthought.

Under 50 lbs empty — easily carried away. Only suitable for enclosed or supervised areas.

50–150 lbs empty — difficult to move casually, especially when filled with soil.

150 lbs+ empty — effectively immovable once planted. Suitable for security applications and unsupervised public spaces.

Remember that soil adds substantial weight — roughly 40–50 lbs per cubic foot when wet — so a filled planter weighs considerably more than the empty specification suggests. This works in your favour for security, and against you if you ever need to reposition.

Placement Considerations

Sun exposure. South and west exposures dry out fastest and need larger soil volumes or more drought-tolerant plantings.

Wind. Exposed, windy locations dry soil rapidly and can topple tall or top-heavy plantings.

Snow clearing. In Canadian settings, confirm planters aren't in the path of plows or snow-blowing equipment, and that they won't become obstacles that force snow to be piled awkwardly.

Salt exposure. Near roads and sidewalks treated with de-icing salt, splash and spray can damage both plants and some planter materials. Recycled plastic is unaffected by salt; metal and concrete are not.

Access for maintenance. Someone needs to water, prune, and replant these. If a planter is hard to reach, it will be neglected.

Coordinating Planters With Seating

If you're specifying both benches and planters for the same space, consider whether they should coordinate.

Matching material and colour creates visual cohesion across a streetscape or campus and signals intentional design rather than accumulated purchases.
