Recycled Plastic vs. Wood Outdoor Benches: Which Lasts Longer in Canada?

If you're specifying outdoor seating for a park, campus, or commercial property, the material decision usually comes down to two options: traditional wood or recycled plastic.

Both look good on day one. The difference shows up in year three, year seven, and year fifteen — and in how much your maintenance budget absorbs along the way.

Here's an honest comparison of how each material performs in Canadian conditions.

The Short Answer

Recycled plastic outlasts wood in almost every Canadian outdoor application, and the gap widens the harsher the environment gets. Wood can look better initially and costs less upfront, but requires ongoing maintenance that recycled plastic doesn't.

If your priority is lowest purchase price, wood wins. If your priority is lowest total cost over 10–20 years, recycled plastic almost always wins.

How Canadian Weather Affects Each Material

Wood

Wood is an organic material, which means it responds to its environment constantly.

Moisture cycling. Wood absorbs water and releases it. In Canada, that cycle repeats hundreds of times a year. Over time, it causes swelling, shrinking, warping, and splitting.

Freeze-thaw damage. Water that penetrates wood expands when it freezes. Each freeze-thaw cycle widens existing cracks. Canadian winters deliver dozens of these cycles per season, and shoulder seasons like March and November are often the worst for it.

UV exposure. Sunlight breaks down lignin, the compound that binds wood fibres together. Untreated wood greys, fibres loosen, and surfaces become rough enough to splinter.

Rot and insects. Wood in ground contact or persistent moisture supports fungal growth. Pressure treatment slows this significantly but doesn't stop it permanently.

Recycled Plastic

Recycled plastic doesn't absorb water, which removes most of the failure modes above.

No moisture absorption. Without water penetration, there's no swelling, no warping from moisture cycling, and no freeze-thaw splitting.

No rot. There's no organic material for fungus or insects to consume.

UV stability. Quality recycled plastic outdoor products include UV stabilizers. Some colour softening can occur over many years, but the structural material doesn't degrade the way wood fibres do.

Consistent through the profile. The colour runs through the entire piece rather than sitting on the surface as stain or paint. Scratches don't expose raw material underneath.

Hardwoods like ipe last longer but cost considerably more and still require oiling to maintain appearance.

Where Wood Still Makes Sense

We're not going to pretend wood has no place.

Aesthetic requirements. Some heritage districts, designed landscapes, and architectural contexts genuinely call for natural wood. Recycled plastic can be manufactured to resemble wood, but it isn't wood.

Lower upfront budget. If capital budget is the binding constraint and maintenance budget is available, wood costs less to purchase.

Covered or sheltered locations. Wood under a roof, on a covered porch, or in a three-season structure faces far gentler conditions and lasts considerably longer than wood in open exposure.

Short intended lifespan. For a temporary installation or a space slated for redevelopment, longevity may not matter.

Where Recycled Plastic Makes the Most Sense

High-traffic public spaces. Parks, transit stops, schoolyards, and plazas see heavy use and receive limited maintenance attention.

Harsh exposure. Waterfront installations, open fields, and sites with no shade experience the most aggressive weathering.

Limited maintenance capacity. If nobody is going to stain these benches on schedule — and in most municipal contexts, nobody is — a material that doesn't need staining is the practical choice.

Sustainability requirements. Many public procurement processes now include environmental criteria. Recycled plastic diverts waste plastic from landfill and can be recycled again at end of life.

The Sustainability Comparison

This one is more nuanced than either side usually admits.

Wood is renewable and biodegradable. Responsibly harvested lumber has a genuinely good environmental story. However, pressure-treated wood contains preservative chemicals, and replacement cycles mean harvesting and transporting new material repeatedly.

Recycled plastic diverts existing waste plastic from landfill and requires no new petroleum extraction. Quality products are recyclable again at end of life, creating a closed loop. The counterargument is that it's still plastic, and manufacturing and shipping have carbon costs.

For most institutional buyers, the deciding factor is longevity: a product that lasts twenty years without replacement generally has a better lifetime footprint than one replaced twice in the same period.

Making the Decision

Ask three questions:

  1. Who maintains this, and how reliably? If the honest answer is "nobody, consistently," choose the material that tolerates neglect.
  2. What's the intended lifespan? Under five years, wood is fine. Fifteen-plus, recycled plastic usually costs less overall.
  3. How harsh is the exposure? Sheltered locations narrow the performance gap considerably. Open, wet, high-sun locations widen it.
