Cantilever vs. Market Umbrellas: Which Is Right for Your Patio or Restaurant?
Shopping for a patio umbrella usually comes down to one question before any other: does the pole go in the middle, or off to the side? That's the difference between a market umbrella and a cantilever (offset) umbrella, and it affects how much usable space you get, what base you need, and how the umbrella handles wind. Here's a plain-language comparison to help you choose.
The short version
A market umbrella has a single pole running up through the centre of the canopy, usually through the middle of a table. A cantilever umbrella has its pole off to one side, with an arm that extends the canopy out over your seating area, so nothing is in the way underneath.
If you're shading a table and want a simple, sturdy setup, a market umbrella is the classic answer. If you want a clear, open space to arrange loungers, a sectional or a dining set without working around a pole, a cantilever is usually the better fit.
The Midtown Supreme Cantilever: the pole sits off to the side, so the space underneath stays open.
Where the pole goes changes everything
- Market umbrellas put the pole at the centre of the canopy. That makes them simple and stable, and they pair naturally with a table that has an umbrella hole. The pole will always be in the middle of the area you're shading.
- Cantilever umbrellas keep the pole out of the seating area entirely. You can slide chairs, loungers or a hot tub surround under the canopy without planning around a pole, and you can rotate the canopy to follow the sun.
Shade coverage and adjustability
Both styles can tilt to follow the sun, but a cantilever gives you more flexibility. Our Midtown Supreme Cantilever covers 100 sq ft with a 10ft x 10ft canopy, rotates a full 360 degrees with a foot pedal, and tilts to control your shade. It comes in a Black, Silver or woodgrain frame. Our Midtown Supreme Market is a larger 11ft x 11ft canopy that opens, tilts and swivels with a detachable crank, which suits a big table or a row of seats.
Bases and installation
Neither style comes with a base, and the base matters. A heavier umbrella with a big canopy needs real weight or a real anchor. For both of these umbrellas you can choose from a fillable base (filled with sand, or water and sand), a concrete anchor plate, a wood deck anchor plate or an in-ground anchor plate. Fillable bases are portable and need no installation; anchor plates are permanent and are the better choice for a commercial patio or a spot you won't move. Pick the base when you order, and it is added to your cart with the umbrella.
